Statement of Purpose

The art of 2D animation is a complex field, which is currently undergoing a revolution in its production and creation, as it faces competition from 3D animation. This change has led to some techniques being discarded while others are expanded. Computer-based 2D animation is coming out as a strong contender, and yet the techniques of hand-drawn animation are still vital, as technology allows this knowledge to be applied in new ways.

My college training was focused primarily on Adobe Flash-based animation, which is largely based on tweened puppet figures, but my own projects and independent study tended towards full-motion hand-drawn animation techniques, albeit applied on computer, using tools created by Toon Boom Animation, which style much of their tools after traditional animation process. My knowledge of various animation techniques and styles was top in my graduating class, and I continue to explore animation in personal projects which stretch my creative muscles. This gives me the flexibility to operate in both worlds, and apply the craftsmanship of hand-drawn animation via puppet-based character works, as well as crafting hand-drawn animation via computer.

My illustration, painting, and general experience in other artistic fields gives me a capacity and foundation upon which my understanding of the finer aspects of the arts are built. My studies, training, and history have also explored parallel fields which interact with animation in other aspects, including computer programming, writing for fiction, acting for stage and screen, and film and television media post-production, including recording, sound design and audio mixing and composition.
